Virgin Media news

Virgin Media remains the fastest major broadband provider in the UK, according to the findings of a recent study.

An ISPreview.co.uk analysis of Ookla speed tests indicated that Virgin Media achieved average download speeds of 52.98Mb during June 2014.

This was more than double the 25.27Mb average achieved by its main rival BT last month.

Zen Internet came in third in the ISPreview.co.uk chart with 21.67Mb, ahead of Plusnet (20.83Mb) and Eclipse Internet (15.77Mb).

TalkTalk was next with an average download speed of 13.40Mb, ahead of EE (13.32Mb) and Sky (13.28Mb).

Virgin Media has spent the last couple of years upgrading the broadband services of its fixed-line customers, in a bid to increase their download capabilities.

The cable provider now offers top speeds of 152Mb - the fastest widely available broadband service in the UK.

BT's fibre-to-the-cabinet service is capable of delivering up to 76Mb download speeds, with take-up of its 330Mb fibre-to-the-premises service remaining low.
