Virgin Media's up to 152Mb cable service was the UK's fastest broadband package in the six months to May 2014.

According to Ofcom data, the ultra-fast broadband deal offered the speediest average downloads - 141.9Mb over a 24-hour period.

BT's up to 76Mb fibre broadband package was the next-best performer, delivering average speeds of 62.0Mb.

Ofcom reported that Plusnet’s up to 76Mb fibre deal delivered the fastest upload speeds, achieving an average of 17.0Mb.

Plusnet's broadband deals are delivered via BT's wholesale network.

Ed Richards, Chief Executive at the media regulator, said it is important for Ofcom to provide consumers with "the best possible information" about broadband packages.

This is to help them understand the options available when choosing broadband, he added.

Mr Richards said consumers need to know how different packages perform and what they can do to get the most from their services.
