ofcom interactive map

Ofcom has launched an interactive tool that allows people to check the quality of broadband services in their area.

Households and businesses simply need to enter their postcode into the Mobile and Broadband Checker to find out average download speeds, the availability of superfast broadand and mobile coverage.

The results could be decisive to people who are considering purchasing a property or setting up a business in a particular location.

Furthermore, the resource means that anyone looking to upgrade their broadband package can easily find out if faster services are available in their area and how they compare on average.

Ofcom added that the Mobile and Broadband Checker empowers broadband customers to find out if their existing service is underperforming, as it compares connection speeds against the average speeds in neighbouring properties.

This information could then be given to a service provider when a customer is reporting a problem with their connection.

Sharon White, Chief Executive of Ofcom, said: "This interactive map is part of our work to arm people and businesses with high-quality, accessible information, helping them make informed decisions about their communications services.”

The results in the broadband checker are based on figures provided by the UK's major internet service providers in June 2015, which are then used to calculate average speeds.

Meanwhile, the information for superfast and ultrafast broadband is based on figures from May last year and takes into account data offered by five alternative network providers.
