Vodafone is set to carry out a 'soft launch' of its long-awaited pay TV service next month.

The mobile phone giant is hoping to compete with the likes of TalkTalk and BT with the service, which is long delayed.

According to the Daily Telegraph, industry sources expect the firm to start rolling out set-top boxes - potentially to staff and existing customers - within the next few weeks.

However, there is still a chance the service, which has suffered numerous delays and was first due to launch last November, could be pushed back further.

Vodafone is said to have a deal in place with Sky to allow customers to watch live football, but it has yet to reach a similar arrangement with BT Sport, which holds exclusive rights to the Champions League and also broadcasts many Premier League fixtures.

Vodafone is looking to build a multi-purpose offering similar to the likes of Sky and Virgin Media and recently announced it is cutting separate line rental charges for its broadband customers - the first major supplier to do so.
