Netflix has revealed which internet service providers offer the best streaming performance to users.

Virgin Media came out on top, with an average speed of 3.77Mbps during 2016. BT was not far behind at 3.71Mbps, followed by Plusnet at 3.44Mbps.

Interestingly, the averages in all three instances are slightly down on those recorded a year earlier.

TalkTalk came in at fourth place, with an average speed of 3.33Mbps, ahead of Sky Broadband and EE, which offered average speeds of 3.31Mbps and 3.31Mbps respectively.

The figures reflect average video streaming performance at prime time, rather than the wider capabilities of each household's broadband connection.

As a result, they are influenced by factors such as the number of people viewing programmes in standard definition, HD and 4K, as well as the types of Netflix packages people have signed up for.
