Virgin Media news

Virgin Media has revealed its broadband base grew by 80,700 in the first quarter of 2017.

This takes its overall number of internet subscribers to 4,997,400.

Commenting on the upturn, Virgin Media said it reflects "strong demand for our superior fibre broadband service in the UK".

The company also credited Project Lightning, a £3 billion scheme to extend ultrafast fibre broadband to 17 million homes by 2019, with helping to drive the upturn.

However, Virgin Media's parent company Liberty Global has confirmed that a recent reboot of the program, along with leadership changes, means progress could slow down slightly this year.

Chief Executive Mike Fries said: "Although we delivered 102,000 new premises at Virgin Media in Q1 and a total of around 700,000 homes to date, we expect that the management transition and related review is likely to result in a slower build pace than what we previously expected for 2017."
