BT Sport is aiming to secure the rights to English Football League (EFL) action when it goes out to tender next month.
Sky Sports currently has the rights to show 112 live fixtures from the Championship, League One and League Two a year.
However, this deal expires at the end of the 2018-19 season and the rights go up for auction in July.
The EFL did have the option of extending its agreement with Sky for a further year, but opted not to do so.
This opens the way for BT Sport to table a rival bid for the rights, which could represent a significant boost to its portfolio.
Simon Green, Head of BT Sport, confirmed in an interview with the Times that he would be "very interested" in securing EFL live coverage.
BT Sport already has exclusive rights to Champions League and Europa League matches until 2021 and shares coverage of the Premier League with Sky Sports.
Furthermore, it has the rights to show certain FA Cup, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 games.
