Ministers have been urged to collaborate with communications providers to achieve "world-class digital connectivity" across Britain.
According to industry body techUK, high-quality communications infrastructure is a vital requirement of a country that is attractive to potential investors.
However, the organisation said the UK's digital infrastructure is merely "good" rather than "great".
As a result, it believes the government must work more closely with the industry, local authorities and Ofcom in order to bring about an improvement.
Julian David, Chief Executive of techUK, commented: "As the UK looks to reposition itself as Global Britain, improving digital infrastructure will incentivise the investment and innovation necessary to raise productivity and deliver economic growth for the whole country."
He argued that establishing more effective and efficient partnerships across every level of government and with industry and public agencies is "fundamental" to the UK achieving the "high-quality, secure, and resilient digital infrastructure that is needed for the 2020s and beyond".
Mr David added that world-class digital connectivity underpins the transformation of almost every sector of the UK economy, from policing and farming to businesses engaged in "advanced and multinational manufacturing value chains".
