About Santander

Santander is part of the Banco Santander S.A. group, which is the largest banking group in the world. Santander first entered the UK banking market in 1988 when Banco Santander S.A. acquired Abbey National plc. The group went on to take over Alliance & Leicester plc and the Bradford & Bingley Building Society in 2010, which were then re-branded as Santander UK.

Santander offers a varied selection of current accounts. The basic Santander current account comes with free everyday banking services such as direct payment options for paying in wages, pensions and benefits. Customers can also set up direct debts and standing orders with a basic current account. The basic account comes with a cash card for easy cash withdrawals from ATMs.

The bank also offers a more comprehensive current account with extra benefits and incentives. A regular Santander current account comes with a Visa debit card for making cash withdrawals from ATMs and facilitating payments in store and online. The account allows customers to enjoy different cashback deals on utility bills and communications contracts.

A regular Santander current account pays interest on credit balances; this is payable at the end of every month. The greater the balance in the account, the more interest is payable.

Other current accounts offered by Santander include student accounts and children’s accounts.

Santander current accounts can be administered in a variety of different ways. Santander has branches on most UK high streets, plus they provide an internet banking portal and online banking apps for smartphones and tablets. Customers can also register for free text or email alerts to notify them when various activities have taken place on their account.

Santander provides a current account switching service for its new customers. A dedicated current account switching service can take care of the transfer of direct debits and standing orders from the old current account to the new one. The switchover normally takes around seven days.
