How you could save up to £918 by next Christmas

How you could save up to £918 by next Christmas

The average household spends at least £500 on Christmas gifts and celebrations, according to the Bank of England. And if you find yourself struggling each year to cover the cost of the Christmas season, there’s a simple way to free up some spending money.

Switching your energy, broadband, mobile and other home services could land you a better, cheaper deal and save you up to £918* each year. That’s money that could be spent on food and gifts rather than broadband and electricity bills.

Rik Smith, energy expert at Uswitch, said: “Many people think that saving money literally means cutting back on everyday items - but it doesn’t have to be like this. The biggest savings can often be unlocked by switching utilities and services. The average household could save nearly £1000 a year by switching to better deals, which could mean that Christmas is already covered for the next couple of years.”

What switching your energy could buy you

Between 1 January 2019 and 20 June 2019, at least 10% of people who switched energy supplier for both gas and electricity with Uswitch saved £477 or more.

According to Good Housekeeping in 2018, a Christmas dinner for eight people costs about £24.90 per person. If you saved £477 by next year’s festive season, you’d have enough to buy 136 Christmas dinners - that’s enough for a family of eight… 17 times over!

What switching your broadband and home phone could buy you

In 2019, the average yearly out-of-contract cost for broadband from the Big Four providers (BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk, and Sky) is £491.91. In contrast, the cheapest broadband deal on the market currently comes in at £299.40 per year.

This works out as an average saving of £193 per year, which can be put towards any number of gifts next Christmas.

One of the most popular Christmas toys of 2019 is Bank Attack, a game which you can order from Amazon for £18 — you could purchase 10 of them to gift to your family or friends and still have change left from your savings on a new broadband deal.
