uSwitch comments on Huawei P9 and P9 Plus launch

5

Commenting on today’s Huawei P9 and P9 Plus launch, Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com says: “Huawei has launched a full scale assault on Western mobile makers with a raft of low cost yet high spec devices that capture the attention of millennials.

“One of the new kids on the block – along with other Chinese challenger brands like Xiaomi – Huawei has managed to raise Apple’s hackles: the launch of the cheaper iPhone SE could be read as the tech giant’s attempt to claw back some of the younger users it lured away.

“Therefore, stalwart mobile makers are not going to like the launch of the flagship P9. Compared to the iPhone 6s it’s slimmer, and boasts a bigger display with better colour saturation, so it could well prove to be a large thorn in the iPhone’s side. But it’s the battery capacity – almost twice the size of the 6s – that is the real killer.

“Partnering with German camera maker Leica is a smart move. Not only is a decent camera a major selling point for smartphones today, it adds brand power to a phone maker that is not yet a household name here in the UK.

“This time around, Huawei has successfully forged relationships with the big four UK networks to help it transition from a realistic challenger to a household name brand – meaning it now really is a force to be reckoned with.”

Samsung launches new S7 and S7 Edge smartphones

3

Following the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com, says: “Misreading the appeal of its curved-screened Edge is not an experience Samsung will wish to repeat. More unsuccessful still was waiting six months to release the bigger S6 Edge+, at a time when all the screen hype had subsided.

“This time around, Samsung has created two disparate devices, forcing people to ask: should I go large for the curved screen?

“What we don’t have here are two phones likely to tempt existing Samsung users to upgrade from the S6 iterations right now. Yes, Samsung has ruggedised things – handsets impervious to dust and water generally go down well, as does improved battery life – but the compromise is the camera, which now has fewer megapixels on both handsets, but megapixels aren’t everything these days.

“Samsung is obviously betting on the curved-screen having enough cool factor to warrant the extra cost, and persuading people to stretch their pockets – both in material and cost – shouldn’t be too hard given the price difference of £70.

“It’ll be very interesting to see how mobile fans respond. By trying to target two demographics they could either nail both, or fall between two stools by not serving the core appeal of what made the S6 Edge so successful – an innovative form factor with an affordable price tag.”

LG launches new G5 smartphone

6

Commenting on the launch of the new LG G5 smartphone, Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com says: “Offering a range of handsets to suit different mobile users is key for any phone maker, but LG has trumped this by offering multiple handsets in one phone.

“LG is stimulating innovation in a declining market, moving modular phones out of the R&D lab into our hands, with expansion kits that will please audiophiles and camera enthusiasts alike.

“It offers a great core device, loads of accessories and top-tier collaborations to turbo charge your device if you’re that way inclined.

“Things like drone controllers, VR, remote controlled robots and 360-degree cameras, all put a shot in the arm of what many feel is a tired sector.

“Interestingly, it’s marketed at the masses, rather than early adopters. The excitement comes from being able to easily add new elements or functionality as more new modules come to market.

“Cost could be a factor, as the prices haven’t been released yet and there is the danger that this could seem – to the average mobile user – either too gimmicky or too much hassle.

“But no other mobile manufacturer is moving in this direction, taking the modular phone concept and making it a reality today. Between that, the Star Wars-style rolling robot, the VR headset and the dual-camera, they’re bringing much of the excitement that the mobile market has been missing.”

Top of the tree: Apple wipes the floor with Samsung to be crowned UK’s most popular handset in 2015

3
  • The iPhone 6 is officially the bestselling handset of 2015, with the older iPhone 5s in second place – Apple dominates the top four spots in the chart
  • Samsung falls wide of the mark, with its flagship Galaxy S6 only in fifth place
  • But Samsung’s oversized Galaxy Note 4 has outsold the iPhone 6s Plus phablet, which doesn’t feature in the top 10 at all
  • The number one phone for Christmas is the new iPhone 6s.

The British love affair with Apple endured in 2015, with six iPhones featuring in a list of the top 10 bestselling mobile phones of the year, according to uSwitch.com, the price comparison and switching service.

The top 10 list is entirely dominated by handsets from Apple and Samsung, although the South Korean maker’s Galaxy S6 doesn’t appear until fifth place, with UK mobile fans preferring even the older iPhone 5s – Apple’s first device to boast a fingerprint scanner – to Samsung’s latest flagship model.

Outselling any other phone in the UK in 2015 is the 16GB Apple iPhone 6, with the pricier (yet more spacious) 64GB model in third place. Despite only being released in September, the iPhone 6s (16GB) was still one of the top five most popular handsets of 2015.

The popularity of the (now-discontinued) 8GB iPhone 5c has endured since the series launched back in September 2013, no doubt because it was the cheapest iPhone up for grabs throughout 2015. Despite being an OAP in tech terms, it still outsold Samsung’s aesthetically innovative S6 Edge.

However, Samsung has managed to outclass Apple in the phablet stakes, in both size and popularity. The oversized Galaxy Note 4 (5.7 inches) has outsold the iPhone 6s Plus (5.5 inches), which doesn’t feature in the top 10 at all. The Note remains a favourite with stylus lovers, tempting mobile fans with its appealing price tag, super-sized screen and powerful specs.

The table below shows this year’s bestselling smartphones:

Apple fever also dominated the Christmas bestseller list. The iPhone 6s (16GB) featured at the top of people’s Christmas lists this December, closely followed by its older siblings the iPhone 6 and 5s. Meanwhile, Samsung’s eye-catching S6 Edge (32GB) was the most popular Android handset for Christmas, beating the Samsung S6 by two places.

Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com, says: “Apple’s authority in the UK mobile market is unrivalled. It’s the only manufacturer that can still attract queues days ahead of its major launches. It even makes Samsung look like a perennial underachiever.

“Interestingly, Apple isn’t actually doing anything particularly groundbreaking. Mobile payment technology existed before Apple Pay, voice recognition before Siri and Force Touch before 3D Touch.

“So why do we like iPhones so much? The fatally attractive combination includes a sleek design, right down to the packaging, and an intuitive and evolving user experience, plus Apple’s colossal brand power, and an ecosystem that locks users in to its TV, music and payment systems. If you’re already an Apple convert, you’ll know it’s hard to escape once you start buying into the brand.

“As our bestseller list shows, Samsung is the only other mobile maker to have garnered some of that mass appeal, but it’s still always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Ranging the Note 5 in the UK could have pushed Samsung further up the bestseller charts, but it backed the wrong horse, believing demand would be tipped towards the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus.”

uSwitch comments on Moto X Force smartphone launch

6

Commenting on today’s launch of the Moto X Force, the world’s first smartphone with a shatterproof screen, Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com says: “The importance of Motorola’s shatterproof screen – an industry first – will resonate with anyone who’s had a butterfingers moment.

“In a recent uSwitch survey, anti-shatter screens topped a list of the ‘most useful’ features on a smartphone, with 70% of mobile owners wanting one.

“A four-year guarantee affirms Motorola’s confidence in its unbreakable screen. It’s a promise the mobile maker will be hoping gives faith to customers. It’s also a potential money-saver too, as ordinarily people would have to budget for repairs themselves.

“Perhaps a less lengthy guarantee would have made this phone a bit cheaper. However, a price just shy of £500 and flagship-level specs puts it on a par with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the HTC One A9.”

uSwitch comments on Google Nexus smartphones

young people mobile phones

Google’s launch event saw the unveiling of two new mobile phones – the Nexus 5X and 6P. Rob Kerr, mobile expert at uSwitch.com, comments: “Google’s twin phone release has seen the search giant team up with two affordable and well-regarded mobile makers meaning it can muscle up to the likes of the OnePlus 2 and Motorola’s new Moto G and X phones.

“The trouble with chasing the middle tier smartphone market is that it’s now populated with affordable, high-spec devices – and these new phones are simply solid, middle of the road phones.

“The most attractive feature is the 6P’s impressive spec sheet. Google is offering high end, iPhone 6s-worthy specs, but at a fraction of the cost.

“But with limited stand out features, other than a well-located fingerprint sensor, Google needs to up its game or the Nexus 5X and 6P will end up with a similar fate to Amazon’s Fire Phone. That was a lesson learned the hard way that not even a world-recognised brand can carry a mobile to success if it’s not worthy.”

uSwitch comments on launch of Sony Xperia Z5, Compact and Z5 Premium

2

Commenting on the launch of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia Z5 and Xperia Compact phones, Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com, comments: “Sony’s new Xperia Z5 Premium handset certainly packs in the pixels with its stunning 4K resolution display, but it raises the question – do we really need TV-quality screens on our phones?

“There isn’t really any 4K content available for mobiles yet, so this is a huge gamble for Sony, and at a time when it really needs a win following the launch of its lacklustre Z3+ handset.

“However, there is an argument for turning up early to the party. Sony’s already well-established in the 4K TV market, so there’s no reason why it shouldn’t attempt to set the benchmark for next-generation smartphones too.

“If that fails, Sony has two other new phones to fall back on. And a three-pronged launch might well turn its fortunes around.

“The smaller-screened Compact and the Z5 don’t have the 4K resolution screen but they both pack in the same, and much-improved, 23-megapixel camera and fast fingerprint scanner as the Z5 Premium.

“It’s a clever move by Sony to give those on lower budgets the luxury of choice. And it proves that mobile makers don’t need to cut corners on specs, just to cut corners on price.”

Samsung launches Galaxy S6 edge+, Note5 and Samsung Pay

2

Commenting on the launch of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Note5, as well as the introduction of Samsung Pay, Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com, says: “If there’s one message Samsung rammed home today, it’s that bigger is better.

“Samsung’s attempts to reclaim the throne from Apple as King of Phablets – with not one but two 5.7 inch screens – reminds us who was the first mobile maker to bring supersize smartphones to the mainstream market with the very first Note.

“For UK mobile users, the difficult choice between the S6 edge+ and the Note5 has been made for us, as the Note5 won’t be available here. That’s a shame, because the Note – once plastic and pleather – just got classier, with a metal and glass makeover.

“Samsung must be hedging its bets on the S6 edge+ being successful as an iPhone challenger in the UK.

“And pitting the S6 edge+ against the upcoming iPhone – just weeks away from hitting the shelves – could be an ingenious move, using it to tempt Apple fans ahead of the September launch.

“If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Apple should be well and truly flattered by the launch of Samsung Pay. It lends further credibility to mobile payments and confirms that they really will become a part of our day to day lives.”

uSwitch comments on launch of OnePlus 2 mobile phone

6

Commenting on the launch of the new OnePlus 2 mobile phone, Rob Kerr, mobile expert at uSwitch.com, says: “Its features rival today’s current flagship phones, so the OnePlus 2 is likely to be a threat to the current spate of top-tier mobiles.

“It is even ahead of the game, by including features coming to the next generation of phones, such as the reversible USB Type-C port connector.

“At less than half the cost of Samsung’s flagship S6 handset, it’ll be looking to capture the mass market where decisions are based on price.

“The company doesn’t have the massive marketing budgets of other manufacturers so, in effect, we’re really seeing the true cost of a flagship phone, without everything in tow to sell it.

“If other mobile makers were to adopt this tact, perhaps we’d see a truer reflection of what we should be spending on a new phone.”

uSwitch comments on launch of The Rook, The UK’s cheapest 4G smartphone from EE

8

Commenting on the EE launch of the cheapest 4G smartphone in UK, Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com, says: “4G phones under £50 aren’t exactly littering the ground, so this is a compelling offer for those of us on tight budgets.

“If you’re only planning to spend £50 on a smartphone, it’s unlikely 4G is high on your priority list, but there will be people who want fast mobile internet on a shoestring, and The Rook certainly fits the bill.

“In terms of specs, The Rook has solid, entry-level features including a fast processor, the latest Android 5.1 and all-important 4G, so this is a good bet for EE pay as you go customers who want the 4G experience for less.

“But beware that the handset will be locked to the EE network, so you’ll need to fork out an unlocking fee if you want to use it on other networks.”
