Deal allowance

Most contracts now offer unlimited texts and minutes. How much data you need depends on how you use your handset.

1GB per month: email, occasional web browsing and watching the odd YouTube video.

2GB per month: heavier web use, email regularly and occasional music and video streaming. For the average smartphone user, 2GB of usage should be just right.

3GB: Cloud-based photo services, streaming video, downloading music and regular email and social networks.

5GB or more: Regularly stream video and music, upload images to social networking sites and multi-player online games. Higher allowances let you make the most of your phone.

Contract length

One-month SIM only contracts give you the freedom to switch provider with just 30 days' notice if a better deal appears, while still providing more generous usage allowances than pay as you go deals. One month-sim only deals usually work on a rolling contract basis.

12-month SIM only contracts provide more generous usage allowances than one-month SIM only deals. However, because you're committing to a longer term deal, you haven't got the same freedom to switch if a better deal becomes available.

4G deals

If you use the internet beyond occasional email and web surfing, you'll want 4G. It's faster than 3G, provides smoother online video and music streaming and lets you do more of whatever it is you like doing.

Nano Sim cards, which are smaller than the standard SIMs they replaced, are now standard across some of the UK's most popular smartphones.

Here, we’ll talk you through everything you need to know about Nano SIMs and help you track down the very best Nano SIM only deals.

Which phones use Nano SIM cards?

Apple have been using Nano SIMs on all their iPhones since the iPhone 5 was launched, as well as in their smaller tablets. Other manufacturers have adopted Nano SIMs too, including Motorola, Samsung, ASUS and Microsoft.

Why did manufacturers drop standard SIMs for Nano SIMs?

Space is at a premium on cutting-edge smartphones, with the result that any space-saving innovations are welcomed by manufacturers with open arms.

Nano SIM cards are simply smaller than regular SIM cards and microSIMS.

That means they free up more space in the phone for other parts and helps the likes of Apple and Samsung to ensure their handsets keep getting slimmer and sleeker.

Standalone Nano SIMs

If you bought your phone off-contract, you’ll need to sign up for a Nano SIM. The good news is that there are plenty of carriers and Nano SIM deals to choose from, including O2, EE, Three and Vodafone.

The cheapest Nano SIM-only deals start at just £7 per month. As well as short-term 12-month contracts, you can also choose a one-month contract.

This means you’re free to cancel at any time. And perhaps more importantly, means you can opt for a cheaper Nano SIM-only deal if and when it appears.

Can you trim your standard SIM down to a Nano SIM?

Converting a standard SIM or micro SIM to a Nano SIM is possible, with some careful filing and craft knife.

However, it's not something we recommend, since you can damage the SIM, leaving you off-radar until your carrier can send out a new one.

Which SIM do I need?

MULTI SIM

Multi SIM fit all types of smartphones , as well as older, more basic handsets.

They come in three parts and you simply push out the size of SIM card you need and pop it in. Most networks supply Multi SIM as standard.

COMBI SIM

Combi SIM are two-in-one SIM that fit many types of smartphones, new and old, and are supplied when you sign up for select phones with O2. Whether you need a standard SIM or a micro SIM, a Combi SIM will fit the bill.

STANDARD SIM

Older smartphones usually need this type of SIM card. Standard SIM are also commonly compatible with more basic handsets that aren’t deemed to be smartphones.

MICRO SIM

A Micro SIM is smaller than a standard SIM, but a little bit larger than the Nano SIM are used in the latest phones.
