Samsung Galaxy Note 7 hero launch

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 7 is now official.

The Korean tech giant revealed its new top–end device today at a special event in London, showing off a device which looks every inch the iPhone killer.

So, what sets it apart? And when can you lay your hands on one? Read on and we’ll tell you five things you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

1 Improved S Pen stylus

The Galaxy Note 7’s key feature is undoubtedly its ultra bright 5.7–inch OLED screen. But what makes this display really tick its the company’s new S Pen.

This tweaked stylus now lets you create gifs with the Smart Select function; translate languages by hovering the pen above the screen; and make notes from the new, unified Samsung Notes app, which takes its cues from its wide–ranging rivals Evernote and Apple Notes.

The S Pen measures just 0.7mm wide at its tip, making it more precise than previous versions. It’s also water resistant.

2 Iris recognition security

Samsung has made good on weeks of rumours, confirming that the Galaxy Note 7 will come with iris recognition technology.

This cutting edge biometric tech allows you to unlock your device at the blink of an eye and works in addition to the device’s fingerprint scanner.

Samsung has backed all of this up with its Knox security software and a new Secure Folder function where you can stash files and folders deeper into the device for added peace of mind.

It also puts the Galaxy Note 7 well ahead of the pack, especially Apple’s iPhone.

3 More space than you could need

Samsung has baked 64GB of storage into the Galaxy Note 7 as standard. But it’s chosen to take things to the next level by offering microSD support up to 256GB.

That means a huge amount of space for movies, 4K video recordings and thousands of photos taken on the device’s 12 megapixel camera.

4 Pre–orders start August 16th, on sale September 2nd

Carphone Warehouse says it will open pre–orders on August 16th. You can pre–register your interest at the retailer’s website now.

Samsung says the device will go on sale on September 2nd, but that anyone who orders before August 30th will be rewarded by getting the device three days before it hits the high street. The handset is available in black and silver.

Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but expect to pay a hefty premium of what is arguably the most powerful smartphone on the market right now.

5 Freebies galore

Samsung Gear VR new angled

If you pre–order a Galaxy Note 7 from selected retailers (including Carphone), you’ll get Samsung’s new Gear VR headset thrown in for free.

This is a major move and one which is likely to put virtual reality even further into the mainstream.

Samsung’s previous VR kit felt niche, but by offering it for free, the company looks set to make strides towards making smartphone–assisted virtual reality a mainstream concern.
