Samsung has announced a new mobile phone entertainment service that lets owners of its internet-enabled phones buy or rent blockbuster movies and TV series.
The impending arrival of the Samsung Movies service has been facilitated by Samsung signing a content deal with three huge Hollywood studios, namely Warner Brothers, Paramount and Universal.
Around 500 movies will be available at launch later this month, including The Dark Knight and Iron Man as well as the evergreen TV shows Friends and E.R.
A 24-hour rental is priced at £2.49, while purchasing the film outright will cost £4.99.
Initially Samsung Movies will only be available for Samsung mobile phones, but the company plans to offer it on a range of different handset marques in months to come.
Nick Turner-Samuels, head of content at Samsung Mobile UK, said: “We’re very excited to be able to provide customers access to their favourite movies and TV shows across a number of different Samsung platforms.
“On top of this, it’s all in superior picture and sound quality to the standard currently available in the market.”
News of the service comes as Samsung has been heavily promoting its Tocco and Tocco Ultra phones, both of which feature large screens suitable for watching movies.
