A Skype SIM card from 3 will hit the market from May 1st, offering cut-price mobile phone calls for just £1.99.
The SIM card can be used in any 3 Skype-enabled handset and will allow users to make free calls to other Skype phones with no top-up fees or data charges. Both contract and pre-pay customers will be able to use the SIM.
3 plans to follow up the deal with a second offer in the summer, which will allow anyone with an unlocked 3G compatible handset to use the SIM and get free calls.
Kevin Russell, chief executive officer of 3 UK, said: “Communication through the internet is exploding. Internet calling or VoIP, social networking, instant messaging and email are used by millions in the UK every single day.
“They are open to all on their PCs and laptops. We want people to be free to communicate from their mobiles in the same way as they do from their PCs.”
According to 3, its customer base of Skype users benefit from around 1.5 million minutes of free Skype to Skype calls daily.
3 launched the Skypephone S2
in August last year.
