Green mobile phones are once again dominating the headlines in technology sections today, with the news that a new solar-powered handset has been unveiled. According to The Telegraph, users will be able to make a one-minute call or power the phone in standby mode for two hours after exposing the handset to sunlight for just ten minutes.
The phone is the second solar-powered handset to be unveiled, after Samsung announced it had developed a similarly green eco phone, which was constructed entirely of recycled plastic, earlier this year. That was similarly rapturously received by the tech press.
However, as we’ve said before the fact remains that for all the column inches these green mobiles garner, mobile phone companies still seem reluctant to put their money where their green consciences are. That means such time as they are prepared to get behind these phones with serious marketing budgets, they’ll remain a niche concern.
