Rumours that Sony is working on a Playstation-branded mobile phone appear to have been substantiated by a report in a Japanese newspaper.
According to Nikkei, a financial daily, the electronics giant has established a development team who will be working on the device over the next few months.
The suggestion that Sony is working in-house on the handset is likely to further fuel speculation that relations between Sony and Ericsson have become increasingly strained recently.
These initially surfaced during August last year when Howard Stringer, chief executive officer at Sony Ericsson, told Die Welt that the companies will need to find new ways to work together to prevent their joint venture from failing.
Sony has yet to confirm or deny the existence of plans for a Playstation mobile phone but has a series of high-profile handset launches planned with Ericsson for later this year.
Among these are the successor to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, dubbed the Xperia X2, and the Greenheart eco phone.
