The Windows Mobile application store will launch with 600 titles, it has been revealed.
Plans were for the new application store were revealed by Audrey Zolghadr, a product manager at Microsoft’s French division, in an interview with Mobi France
Mr Zolghadr also disclosed that Windows Marketplace and will be available initially to users in 29 countries across the globe.
News of Microsoft’s plans comes as more and more mobile phone industry players are exploring new revenue streams in the face of the credit crunch.
Meanwhile, the popularity of downloading apps among consumers has exploded recently with the advent of app-friendly handsets such as the Nokia N97 and the Android powered HTC Magic.
This was borne out earlier this month when research company Medialets announced that Palm’s App Catalog had recorded 700,000 unit sales within two weeks of its launch.
The impressive showing came despite the fact that just 30 individual applications were on offer.
