Mobile phone 3G coverage gaps revealed

Mobile phone 3G internet coverage remains patchy in much of the UK, a new report has shown, despite massive take up for mobile internet services.

At the heart of Ofcom’s new Mostly Mobile study are a series of maps that illustrate areas that are poorly served by mobile phone networks.

Coverage is shown to be problematic for mobile customers in East Anglia, much of Scotland and in the North East. The South West and Wales are also shown to be hamstrung by poor service.

Conversely, Londoners and those in the Midlands enjoy the best coverage.

Commenting on the results, the telecommunications regulator said: "Coverage of mobile networks in the UK is generally good. Indeed, it is better than in other comparable countries, but some issues persist.

"For 3G network coverage there is still a noticeable difference between rural and urban areas, and also between different parts of the UK."

The mobile phone network providing the best coverage was found to be 3, followed closely by Orange.
