Mobile phone call costs slashed across EU

Mobile phone roaming charges have become 60 per cent cheaper today, with the introduction of EU regulations.

Under the new rules, the cost of making a mobile phone call to an EU country is capped at €43 cents per minute, plus VAT. Previously, the upper limit was €46 cents.

Meanwhile, charges for receiving calls have fallen from €22 cents per minute to €19 cents, while sending a text has gone down in price to €11 cents, which is less than half the previous average of €29 cents.

Additionally, a cap of €1 is to be placed on the wholesale cost of data roaming, which refers to the figure that mobile phone companies charge one another for allowing customers to use their networks.

This is anticipated to be passed on to consumers, resulting in lower charges for mobile internet use.

Viviane Reding, telecommunications commissioner at the EU, said: "The roaming rip-off is now coming to an end. Expect the new roaming rules to make it much cheaper to surf the web on your mobile while abroad in the EU."
