It is rare that a brand new mobile phone supported by a major advertising campaign gets pulled from the shelves, but the Sony Ericsson Satio has suffered precisely this fate after huge numbers of customers complained to Phones4U and The Carphone Warehouse.
The Satio was expected to allow the ailing manufacturer to finally turn a profit after losses over the last five financial quarters.
The 12 megapixel camera and touch screen interface of the Satio was aimed at establishing Sony Ericsson as a leading manufacturer of smartphones after it and many others had suffered as a result of the continued dominance of the Apple iPhone.
All of the complaints relate to a software glitch within the Satio and according to the UK division of Sony Ericsson this issue is being remedied as quickly as possible.
Independent industry analysts have indicated that this negative publicity will be extremely damaging to the image of the manufacturer and could seriously impact the sales of its future smartphones, including the upcoming Xperia X10.
