Growing smartphone security threat announced

Scott Totzeke, a security expert supervising the protection of new BlackBerry handsets, has warned that attacks on mobile phones by hackers will become more prevalent as smartphones continue to grow in popularity.

Mr Totzeke believes that mobile phones could be used by hackers to bombard websites with traffic from thousands of devices, resulting in a Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDOS).

DOS has already been used to cripple and then crash websites by various groups with different intentions and by hijacking smartphones criminals would be able to hold even greater sway online.

It is clear that the statement has in no small part been released in order to alert BlackBerry owners as to the availability of security updates for their handsets which are regularly released by manufacturer RIM.

Most owners of smartphones will be able to take advantage of manufacturer software updates which are frequently released to combat the various security threats resulting from the activities of criminal factions.
