A million owners of the iPhone and iPod Touch have now used the App Store to download the Sky News application, according to a spokesperson for Sky.
After its launch in May 2009, the Sky News app gained popularity quickly, with its offering of current affairs in text, video and photographic forms.
The impressive performance of the app on the iPhone has encouraged Sky to create its own mobile internet service which aims to generate more interest in internet access via mobile phones.
Anyone with a mobile phone that has internet access can connect to the mobile version of the Sky News website, with the form and functionality automatically adjusting to fit the specific capabilities of each user's mobile.
Sky's mobile controller David Gibbs said that it had seen particularly strong performance for all of its iPhone applications, although Sky News is the most popular by a significant margin.
Mr Gibbs also indicated that the new Sky News website for all mobile internet users was set to expand upon its online offerings and was available free to everyone in the UK.
