MWC 2010: Android smartphones to get NetFront browser

The NetFront browser is coming to Android smartphones, it has been announced, in the latest sign of Google's platform's growing profile.

Although NetFront has offered its software on Sony Ericsson smartphones for some time now, its browser app was hitherto unavailable to Android phone owners.

NetFront has been present on Symbian S60 smartphones from Sony Ericsson in the past and has been praised for offering forward-looking features, such as a download manager and automatic page optimisation for mobile web browsing.

NetFront Browser 4.0 will also be a key product on show at the Mobile World Congress this week. Using a JavaScript engine it will provide several new features including widgets and an updated user interface.

It looks as though owners of Android-based smartphones could soon become spoilt for choice when it comes to web browsers as 2010 progresses.

With a version of Firefox on the horizon and now NetFront planning their own Android launch, the competition is likely to be fierce and users could be divided by their browser loyalty.
