Nokia is in the process of creating a Design by Community project, which will see keen mobile fans given the chance to mould the manufacture of smartphones with collective input.
The Nokia Conversations blog will be a hub for communication between Nokia professionals and those members of the public who want to get involved in the process.
A democratic system will be used to allow voting on various features and ideas, ensuring that the most popular options get through.
Much debate on the site currently surrounds the type of screen technology that should feature in Nokia's next big smartphones, with multitouch capacitive screens taking on the resistive options still used by the N97 Mini.
The merits of full QWERTY keypads are also being discussed, as is the size of the screen with which the majority of people would be comfortable.
Nokia plans to keep the project operational until May 2010, at which point the various concept phones that have developed over the course of the initiative will be voted upon to find a winner.
This will then be rendered by Nokia's experts into a fully realised prototype.
