Version 4.2 of the Google Maps app for Android has arrived in the US, bringing with it the ability to optimise navigation for use whilst on a bicycle.
The update has not been brought over to the UK as yet, but it is compatible with all Android smartphones sporting version 1.6 and upwards.
Google has created a bike layer which users can toggle on or off. This is overlaid on top of the standard maps to show cycle paths and safe bike havens, complete with colour coded routes to identify different types of biking routes.
Google has updated the maps app with a standalone sat nav icon, which means users can just press this to get the navigation function up and running rather than first opening Google Maps.
Geo-tagging, location sharing and voice search are also optimised in the newly updated maps app.
