Scores of iPhone 3G and 3G S owners are reporting problems with their handsets after downloading iOS 4 - the latest iteration of Apple's operating system.

Various members of the Twitter community who downloaded iOS 4 have announced that access to both Google Apps and Microsoft Exchange has been affected, with emails and calendar information locked up.

Google said that it would look into the issue and attempt to find a fix for the conflict, although no specific details as to just what kind of problems were being encountered were given.

Speculation amongst iPhone owners suggests that the way in which iOS 4 is programmed does not allow for complete integration with the ActiveSync software and related services offered by Microsoft.

Both Google Apps and Microsoft Exchange rely upon this for synchronisation of emails and contacts across platforms.

Reports suggest that the oldest versions of Exchange, notably the 2003 edition, are most likely to exhibit issues when used on an iOS 4 smartphone.

In general this means that only corporate users will have to sit through the teething troubles of the new platform, but this could be a relatively large contingent amongst Apple's customers.

Apple had promised that iOS 4 would be better able to tackle the needs of business users, with particular attention paid to its Exchange functions. However, it has perhaps neglected the older versions whilst forgetting that many firms do not update their systems on a regular basis.
