A solution to the reception problems that have plagued the iPhone 4 in the first few days of its commercial life could soon be delivered in the form of a software update.

Apple founder Steve Jobs has suggested that version 4.0.1 of the iOS platform on which the iPhone 4 runs could be launched later in the week and this has been partially confirmed by some hastily removed posts on the official Apple help forums.

The issue with the iPhone failing to receive decent coverage when held in a particular manner is apparently not a hardware problem, but a bug in the software that fails to display the correct number of bars on-screen even if reception is good, according to Apple Insider.

iPhone 3G S owners who upgraded to iOS 4 when it arrived last week have claimed that reception has dropped since the upgrade, which would imply that it is not the actual hardware that is at fault, but Apple's new software platform.

In a typically cryptic email to a concerned customer, Mr Jobs stated: "There is no reception issue. Stay tuned."

Some have interpreted this as further proof that a software update is incoming imminently.
