Developer ComiXology created the app with guidance from DC and the firm will be offering users the chance to buy new issues from within the app for direct download to their smartphone.

The comics will cost the equivalent of between 66p and £2 and from day one about 100 unique titles will be made available via the app.

DC has decided to go for a mix of retro classics and future hits, although reports suggest that the comics will not be as comprehensive as the versions available in shops.

DC has significant plans for the app and it seems that it will be testing the water over the coming months by simultaneously releasing new titles through the iPhone and via its retail channels.

The DC app has taken second place in the popularity rankings for free eBook apps on the iPhone, sitting just behind Apple's official iBooks software.
