A report from Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty stated: "We see the iPhone installed base rising from approximately 30 million subscribers at the end of 2009 to over 100 million by the end of 2011.

"Upgrades will emerge as a key demand driver in the coming years."

This boom is largely expected because of the huge swell in interest generated by the recently announced and soon to be released iPhone 4, which is looking set to be one of Apple's biggest selling smartphones of all time.

In the US about 57 per cent of iPhone owners are stuck with a legacy model that will not be compatible with the upgraded iOS 4 platform which is arriving in unison with the iPhone 4. As a result, most are unsurprised by the high demand, according to Fortune.

Apple's share price has continued to soar this year, with nearly a third added to its value in the first half of 2010 alone.
