October launch of Windows Phone 7 targeted

Microsoft believes that it will be able to bring the first smartphones based on the new Windows Phone 7 operating system (OS) to the UK market by October 2010.

The first batch of pre-release smartphones based on Windows Phone 7 will be in the hands of developers by July, Microsoft's Brandon Watson told TechRadar.

Mr Watson gave a relatively vague time scale for Windows Phone 7's arrival as "between October and New Year" for the UK and other international destinations.

The tech giant has worked hard to completely reinvent its mobile OS after its recent efforts failed to win it many fans. Preview versions of Windows Phone 7 have already impressed members of the media, fuelling anticipation of the release.

Microsoft is hoping that by integrating Xbox 360 features it will win over customers from different demographics and social networking will also play a central role in the Windows Phone 7 experience.

Earlier this week, the company followed Apple's lead by announcing that it will not allow pornographic or smutty apps on its Marketplace software download service.
