Rather than waving your mobile around in the air in the hope of obtaining a signal, an alternative is to use Vodafone's new Twitter service that shows you where to look for network coverage.

As long as users have a Twitter account and the ability to tweet, they can simply post a message that includes their whereabouts, the type of network they want to find and whether they are out and about or sitting at home.

To make sure it gets to Vodafone, they'll need to include the hashtag #vodafonesignal.

After providing this information, Vodafone will provide an interactive overview of the local area, showing where the coverage is best and perhaps encouraging mobile owners to sign up to a Vodafone deal if they are not already a customer.

It is possible to receive exactly the same treatment if people do not have a Twitter account by heading to the Vodafone site and choosing the option titled 'Not On Twitter'.
