Microsoft is giving its 100,000 staff worldwide free smartphones running its much-anticipated Windows Phone 7 platform, it has been announced.
The technology giant is spending some £2.6 million on the scheme, as it gears up for the release of handsets running the latest iteration of its operating system in two to three months time.
News of the firm's plans comes in the week that it formally announced its Windows Phone 7 launch partners, which include Samsung, LG and Taiwanese Android phone specialists HTC.
The operating system has been in development for 18 months, with Microsoft currently making final alterations and tweaks to avoid disappointing fans with a substandard package.
Back in June, the company shocked E3 2010 conference attendees when it gave away the slimmed down Xbox 360 to delegates, but this new giveaway is on a different scale.
