AT&T has commissioned Alcatel Lucent to develop a fix to this bug which first reared its head over the weekend and has consequently joined similar problems that have been plaguing the iPhone 4 since its launch.

The ability to make and receive voice calls on the iPhone 4 is not affected by this bug, but the data speeds are significantly impacted, according to experts.

Apparently only a select number of areas are affected by this problem, with the issue arising only when Alcatel Lucent networking equipment is being harnessed by the smartphone.

Alcatel Lucent has expressed optimism that the problem can be fixed without modifying mobile network base stations, although no solution has as yet been found.

The iPhone 4 should theoretically be able to download at speeds of up to 5.67Mbps via HSPA networks, but in affected areas the speeds dip down below 384Kbps.

Only two per cent of US subscribers will feel the effects of this glitch and there is no word as to whether the international iPhone customer base will be similarly affected.
