The iPhone's App Store has been given a new Hardcore Games section to showcase "the most positively engaging and altogether difficult games available".
Amongst the first games in the section are Chaos Rings, a high quality role-playing game with impressive graphics and Archetype, a first-person shooter that offers action-packed thrills.
Apple's creation of the Hardcore Games area within iTunes and the App Store is noteworthy because at the moment the iPhone and iPod Touch are commonly associated with casual gaming classics as Angry Birds and Plants Vs. Zombies.
By catering to a crowd that looks for less family-friendly titles, Apple could win more custom from the manufacturers of standalone handheld consoles like the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS.
The iPhone has recently become the platform of choice for id Software's Rage, an upcoming first-person shooter which was showcased running smoothly on an iPhone 4 during the Quakecon 2010 event this summer.
