An update to the Hotmail messaging service which pushes new mail to the user's mobile will be made available for the iPhone 4, Palm webOS and Windows Phone 7 platforms.
Any mobile which is compatible with two ActiveSync accounts will be able to take advantage of the update, which launched this week. This includes people who do not use a server running Exchange to receive their mobile email functions.
Microsoft's Dharmesh Mehta talked up the benefits of ActiveSync during an interview with Cnet claiming that people who have Hotmail accounts will be able to get all of the features and updates they require sent directly to their mobile phones.
It's likely that Microsoft will place plenty of focus on its in-house mobile services as the arrival of Windows Phone 7 draws near. With the Bing search engine, Microsoft Virtual Earth and the Hotmail client all onboard, it can also drawn upon Windows Live Messenger to flesh out its social offerings to lure in consumers.
