O2 is carrying out extensive testing on the Android 2.2 update for the HTC Desire, with a view to rolling it out to customers in the next few weeks.
A spokesperson told TechRadar: "We're working with HTC to bring the latest version of Android, 2.2 FroYo, to our HTC Desire customers as soon as possible.
"We expect this to take several weeks and we will update our customers once the new software is available."
UK Desire owners who picked up SIM free will be able to update their smartphones this week, but those on network contracts will need to wait for carriers to completed the testing process.
O2 seems to have a similar update schedule to T-Mobile, whose have been told to expect Android 2.2 to arrive on the Desire in September.
Android 2.2 is highly anticipated by fandroids because it will add many additional capabilities to the popular smartphone.
