Next launches 10-inch Android tablet for £180

Yes, you've read that correctly. High-street fashion retailer Next has indeed released its own Android powered tablet to take on the iPad with a bargain price of just £180.

Probably not the first name you’d think of to come out with a high-end electronic device, let alone a tablet, but clearly someone at the Next management thinks there is a market for a cheap Android tablet that is actually cheap.

The tablet of yet unknown manufacturing origin, features a capacious 10.1-inch LCD touchscreen with a decent 1024 x 600 resolution. Unfortunately the touchscreen is resistive, so it’s probably nowhere near as responsive as the capacitive touchscreens found on the iPad or the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but for that sort of price, you really can’t complaint much.

On the bright side, the tablet sports a decent 1Ghz ARM 11 processor and comes with 8GB onboard storage and a microSD slot to expand that further. There is also Wi-Fi connectivity, a 3.5mm headset jack, built-in microphone and one USB port.

Despite the lack of any distinguishing features or even a low-end camera, the Next tablet actually seems like a decent device all round. Plus, it doesn’t look too shabby either.

With the Samsung Galaxy Tab rumoured to cost around £600, the Next Tablet could be a great gift item this fall for entry-level users. So next time you’re out shopping for new clothes, you might want to pick this up for your mom.

The tablet is available through the Next website and in-stores.
