Nokia cocks snook at HTC

A small army of youths brandishing Nokia-branded balloons the site of HTC’s mystery London press event, as the Finnish phone manufacturer looks to hijack the press call for its own ends.

Nokia is currently holding its own tech jamboree in the capital over at the ExCel Centre in the shape of the Nokia World developers’ summit.

However, to ensure it’s not outdone by HTC, the manufacturer this morning sent over a team of likely characters each of whom was carrying a large red balloon emblazoned with the slogan: “I know where I’m going with Nokia’s Ovi Maps.”

Immature? Maybe. Effective? Almost certainly. But whether the stunt which was captured by Engadget deflect from the recent soap opera-style drama at executive level in Nokia is debatable. And whether it'll do anything to spur sales of the new devices Nokia unveiled yesterday is even less clear.

For the record, these included the N8 high-end smartphone as well as the enterprise focussed E7 and two new CSeries handsets, the C6 and C7.

HTC’s event was marked the launch of the HTC Desire HD and Desire Z Android smartphones, plus a new iteration of its Sense custom user interface.
