Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and X8 owners face a painful wait for Android 2.2 to arrive on their handsets, a leaked document suggets.
Owners of the well regarded Xperia X10 and its Mini and Mini Pro variants and the X8, which currently run the ageing 1.6 version of Google’s operating system, are expected to get Android 2.1 at the end of the month, it was announced this morning via the X10 blog.
The update had been expected to be pushed out this month, but has been hit with an unforeseen delay that Sony Ericsson attributes to the need to “spend some additional time on the software to really make sure we roll out with the right quality and user experience”.
However, if that wasn’t irksome enough for owners of the X10 family and the X8, an official Sony Ericsson roadmap for 2010 leaked at the IFA show in Berlin contains no mention of when the latest 2.2 version will arrive – strongly suggesting that it won’t be here until next year at the earliest.
The reason for the delay is not known, but the fact that Sony Ericsson has consistently lagged behind other Android manufacturers in pushing out updates is thought likely to be due to compatibility problems with the firm’s Rachael custom skin.
