Social networking phenom Facebook has updated its official apps for the iPhone and Android platforms to include two major features, Groups and Places.
The former is pretty self-explanatory. It allows users to set up groups about their interests and invite others to join them. Whereas Places is a service similar to Foursquare that enables users to “check-in” at places they visit and keep friends and stalkers informed.
What’s new about Places though is that Facebook has partnered with prominent businesses to give American users ‘deals’ when they check-in at participating stores.
Gap for example, is offering the first 10,000 visitors a free pair of jeans and then subsequent visitors 40 per cent discount and free clothing. McDonalds meanwhile, will be donating $1 to every customer who checks in at its outlets.
We think this is a really neat idea, especially seeing it used for a good cause. Hopefully we will see something similar being introduced in the UK in the not-too-distant future.
The update is available right now from the App Store and Android Market.
