Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 users are to be upgraded to Android 2.1, AKA Éclair, before the end of the year, it has been confirmed.
The X8 currently runs the ageing 1.6 Donut version of Android out of the box, leaving it some way behind devices such as the HTC Desire and Desire HD, both of which are on Android 2.2.
However, Sony Ericsson (SE) has assured X8 users that it is planning to roll out 2.1 within the next two months. Responding to an entreaty from a Twitter follower, SE said that the update “should be released later in the year”.
Xperia X10 owners, whose phones are also still running Donut, should also be in line for a quantum leap to 2.1 imminently, after SE began a staggered rollout to European phone owners on Sunday.
Sony Ericsson is believed to have had to delay the update after encountering problems with ensuring it is compatible with its Rachael custom user interface/skin.
New features that 2.1 brings to phones in the X10 range, including the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro, include more homescreens to fill with widgets and improved imaging capabilities.
