Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread coming to Nexus One "in weeks"

Gingerbread, the latest, most dee-lish edition of the Android operating system is headed to the Nexus One by next month, Google has confirmed.

The search giant tweeted via its @googlenexus account: “The Gingerbread OTA for Nexus One will happen in the coming weeks. Just hang tight!”

Gingerbread made its debut with the recently launched Nexus S, the second-ever Google branded smartphone, which hits store shelves in the UK tomorrow.

It is therefore fitting that its older brother is the first in line to receive the firmware via an over the air update and the tweet gives owners a more specific timeframe to look forward to getting on board with the latest and great Android has to offer.

These include a revamped UI with a cleaner, greener look, an enhanced on-screen keyboard with new copy and paste functionality, built-in VoIP/SIP support and many more.

The standout feature though, is Near Field Communications (NFC), a short-range wireless technology that could potentially replace the Oyster Card.
