We already knew the next Android update, that is the one after Honeycomb, would be called Ice Cream. Now there is word in town that it will be of the ‘Sandwich’ variety. Nom nom.
That’s according to Jason Kincaid of TechCrunch anyway, who has reportedly heard it straight from the horse’s mouth, AKA high-ranking Android mover and shaker Andy Rubin. Apparently Ice Cream is a little hard to distinguish, visually, from frozen yoghurt and hence the decision to call it a sandwich was taken. In case you hadn’t noticed the pattern, all the Android updates are in alphabetical order, i.e. Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb and now Ice Cream Sandwich.
Details of what Ice Cream… erm Sandwich, will pack are still thin on the ground, but we were to take the image of an ice cream sandwich literally, it would probably have some major features in the middle of all a delicious new UI.
Meanwhile, the folks over at Pocket-Lint say they have it on good authority that Ice Cream will land this summer, possibly in June/July, which makes a whole lotta sense, since that’s when one would expect to consume Ice Cream. Simply genius.
So there you have it, a name and a release window to look forward to tasting Google’s next best.
