iPhone: First Direct app brings money transfers to Apple smarties

iPhone owners will now be able to transfer money between bank acounts using their handsets, with the arrival of a new app from First Direct.

Apple’s platform isn’t short of banking apps, with NatWest, Ulster Bank and pariah lender RBS all offering fairly rudimentary applications that let you see your account balance and grab a mini statement.

However, First Direct’s free to download Banking on the Go effort is a real advance on what’s already out there. Not only does it let you shuttle money to those you owe, you can also view your last 20 transactions and authorise payments.

Although exclusive to iDevices right now – the application also works with the iPod Touch -, First Direct is prepping Android and BlackBerry versions.

First Direct Chief Executive Matt Colebrook said: "This is about making the banking experience simpler and quicker, allowing our iPhone enabled customers to access key features of our internet banking; whenever they want and wherever they want.

"The iPhone App is as a huge step forward, but it's just the beginning of our ambitions for mobile banking. Our plans for 2011 are to make our 'on the go' mobile service available on other smartphone devices."
