Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android multi-touch update starts

Sony Ericsson (SE) has begun pushing out an Android update this week in Japan that enables multi-touch for the Xperia X10 range, ahead of a scheduled first-quarter roll out in the UK.

The upgrade for customers on the NTT DoCoMo network brings much-needed improved gesture recognition to the original Xperia X10, X10 Mini and Mini Pro handsets.

It lands amid a welter of protests from owners of the devices after SE recently stated that it had no plans to make any more updates available for the handsets, which currently run the somewhat outmoded 2.1 version of the Android OS.

How much multi-touch will pacify disenchanted users is something of a moot point, however. That’s largely because its only real function is that it finally brings to pinch-to-zoom functionality to the handsets. And even then, this doesn’t necessarily work with third-party apps.

Prior to Android 2.1, AKA Éclair, hitting the phones late last year, owners of the X10 line had been stuck on the creaking 1.6 (Donut) version of Android, which it had shipped with back in March last year.

Although not officially confirmed, the reason for SE’s reluctance to issue more updates is that it encountered extensive problems getting Éclair to work with its custom skin.
