Smartfans aching to get their mitts on Sony Ericsson’s upcoming gaming powerhouse the Xperia Play and the mid-range blower Xperia Neo, will be able be able to do so before the end of March, it appears.
Online vendor Expansys has listed product pages for the hotly awaited handsets that point to a March 28th release date for the Xperia Neo, while the Xperia Play is due to be in stock a couple of days later on March 31st.
SIM free versions of the Play and Neo are available to preorder for £539.99 and £374.99 respectively. However, punters hoping to spread out the one-off outlay will be able to pick the handsets up free with a range of contract options from major carriers including 3, Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile and Orange.
The Xperia Play, the closest thing to a ‘PlayStation phone’ that we’re probably ever going to get, is stunning bit of kit that marries design elements of the Xperia X10 and the PSPgo handheld gaming system. It packs a capacious 4-inch multi-touch panel, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with an Adreno 205 GPU, a slide-out gamepad with the trademark PlayStation face buttons, dual optical touch pads and shoulder buttons to boot. There’s also a five-megapixel camera on board.
The Neo, on the other hand, features just the touchscreen, which measures a slightly smaller 3.7-inch but more than makes up for it with an 8.1-megapixel snapper LED flash and an Exmor R sensor. Both the Play and Neo will support HD video recording in 720p and run on Google’s latest, greatest Gingerbread iteration of the Android operating system.
