Music streaming service we7 has launched a free online radio app for the Android powered devices.
The Radio Plus app for Android allows users to listen to music for free, with advertisements played in between songs.
Users are able to create up to ten radio stations themed with their favourite artists or genre, or choose from a range of preset stations. If you’ve used Last.fm, you’ll know what to expect here.
If you don’t like ads, however, we7 also has a full-fledged app that gives you on-demand access to some seven million tracks, without pesky commercials, and even without an internet connection thanks to the offline sync mode that allows songs to be cached/saved on the device. Although that requires a ‘premium plus’ subscription for an outlay of £9.99 a month.
Steve Purdham of We7, said: "Music and mobiles are the ideal combination. But until now when you have streamed internet radio as soon as you lost the connection, you lost the song."
Analyst Mark Mulligan, of Forrester Research, added: "It is vitally important that it's free – there has to be a recognition that the vast majority of people don't believe in paying for digital content.
"If content is everywhere, you either have to make it exceptional so a small number of people will pay, or embrace the free business model – that is the only way to the mass market."
The Radio Plus app is free to download right now from the Android Market. An iOS version is also expected to land at a later date.
