The fabled white edition of the iPhone is still on course to hit retail this spring, one of Apple’s high-ranking execs has revealed.
The colour variant of Apple’s current-gen smartie was initially scheduled to land back in June last year. However, the seemingly cursed handset has since been hit by a string of delays apparently caused by manufacturing problems.
These reportedly related to light leakage issues that would have seriously damaged the smartie’s credentials as a cameraphone as well as the perfectionist types at Apple encountering problems finding the ‘right’ shade of white paint.
However, the ill-fated handset is now almost here. If Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing at Apple Phil Schiller can be believed, anyway.
Responding to a Tweet enquiring about the white iPhone, Schiller tweeted: “The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty).”
What’s not clear from his Tweet is whether the white phone he’s referring to is the current-gen iPhone 4 or a white edition of the iPhone 5, which is set to land in June.
For what it’s worth, we think Apple will persist with a fourth-gen white phone, but might well abandon the Gorilla Glass shell that appears to have been at the root of many of the problems that have been blamed on the paint.
