The fifth major iteration of Apple’s iOS operating system has already been jailbroken, hackers claim.
A developer release of iOS 5 was reportedly cracked by the iPhone Dev Team in less than 24 hours, after one its members, ‘MuscleNerd’, announced that they have successfully installed Cydia – a third party apps repository - on a fourth-generation iPod.
iPhone Dev Team, in case you didn’t know, is not to be mistaken for the people in charge of developing iOS, but rather a group of programmers dedicated to ‘liberating’ it from Apple’s clutches.
Although Apple is strongly opposed to jailbreaking – which is essentially a method used to gain ‘root access’ to the stuff that controls the OS – the US government has ruled it completely legal.
Cupertino argues that jailbreaking is responsible for widespread piracy of applications and can permanently render some devices inoperable.
iOS 5 is scheduled to arrive to regular users in autumn. Check out our round up of top ten features it brings to the table.
